MIXMASTER Inventor Ivar Jepson 1928

WHEN IT COMES TO MIXING THINGS UP in the kitchen, you’ve probably heard the names Hamilton and Beach. Perhaps if Sunbeam had been renamed Jepson Indus-tries, the man responsible for the Mix master mixer would get the recognition that he, too, deserves.

Ivar Jeoson was the head designer for Chicago Flexible Shaft Company, a manufacturer formerly known for its driveshafts and mechanical sheep shears, when he developed the tonic two-beater Mix master for the company’s Sunbeam division in 1928.

The Swedish immigrant was also responsible for innovations in, among many other things, shavers, waffle irons, and boat hoists. But it was his affordable Mix master mixer—with its detachable beaters and pivot arm—that helped make Sunbeam a household name.
